The university was founded in the late 19th century as a charity to serve the local area and gave generous grants for the disadvantaged and students from less affluent families.
Since the creation of Cockaigne, the university has extended its remit to promote the values of the town and the advancement of the young residents.
While places are protected for residents, there are some places available to non-residents and the university welcomes applicants from interested students.
